5 Top Favourite On-Screen Couples Part I

It's Valentine's Day and all I feel like doing is compiling a list of my favourite on-screen couples! Hooray ;) Because it's too mainstream to date on Valentine's Day. In case you want to get into the mood for love, Tatta Hitotsu no Koi (J-drama) and Moulin Rouge (movie) are the only ones that can make the official romance mark.

1. Kanzaki Hiroto & Tsukioka Nao in Tatta Hitotsu no Koi
Played by |
Kamenashi Kazuya & Haruka Ayase

Country of Production |
Japan

Why I Love Them |
They are the inspiration of this post! This story is the typical rich girl meets poor boy forbidden love story, but there is a realistic, heartbreaking twang to the drama that doesn't involve mindless eloping. A lot of thought-provoking and trying elements to a relationship that is highly relatable.

Memorable Moment(s)
Kissing in front of the ferris wheel, and this video.

Memorable Quote(s) |
Only Nao can make a boyfriend's smoking habits romantic: Your cigarette light... looks like a firefly.

2. Christian & Satine in Moulin Rouge
Played by |
Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman

Country of Production |
United States/ Australia

Why I Love Them |
A poet and a dancer. They profess their undying love to one another in graceful prose and song, what can be more romantic than that?

Memorable Moment(s)
The scene while they were singing in the balcony with the full moon to complete.

Memorable Quote(s) |
Satine: Besides, I can't fall in love with anyone
Christian: Can't... fall... in love? But, a life without love, that's... terrible...
Satine: No, being on the street, that's terrible.
Christian: No! Love is like oxygen!
Satine: What?
Christian: Love is a many splendored thing. Love lifts us up where we belong. All you need is love!

3. He Shuhuan & Lu Yiping in Romance in the Rain
Played by |
Leo Ku & Vicki Zhao

Country of Production |
China/ Taiwan

Why I Love Them |
Another case of a forbidden love, family feud and a whole lot of wilful personality in Yiping. The story culminates into a beautiful tortured love when Shuhuan tries to reconcile his infatuation with her and her stubborn ways. Another writer and entertainer combination. Do you see a trend already?

Memorable Moment(s)
What's a drama without the threat of death, my favourite moments of the romance drama includes Yiping threatening to jump from the bridge and Shuhuan returning from the war safely - oh, the reunion at the train station brings tears to every eye in the room.

Memorable Quote(s) |
For those who can read Chinese - now you see how Yiping is dreadfully stubborn. But it's wonderfully entertaining to watch her tantrums. Luckily, she found her match in Shuhuan.

Played by |
Mark Chao & Yang Zishan

Country of Production |
China

Why I Love Them |
Young love that blossoms into adulthood, with imperfections but nevertheless, beautiful. Many other relationships running parallel in this movie, with an urban backdrop for romance in this modern age - deals with how people view relationships as a competition, how you don't always end up with people you love the most, and how the shit can hit the fan yet the off button is spoilt. The more realistic version of Ke Jingteng and Shen Jiayi.

Memorable Moment(s) |
Ironically my most memorable moment was Zhenwei with her ex at the bar, quietly unraveling their tangled emotions that were accumulated over the years.

Memorable Quote(s) |
他即使有千般不好,万般辜负,毕竟是我爱过的人。

5. Richard Cypher & Kahlan Amnell in Legend of the Seeker
Played by |
Craig Horner & Bridget Regan

Country of Production |
United States

Why I Love Them |
Love bubbling in the magical realm is always more attractive. They literally spend 24/7 with one another, with the company of some other people, but yet still manages to fall in love. Ah why not, when they are constantly trying to protect, save and impress one another. Kahlan is a confessor, which also means she can see through any lie, so Richard can only be but entirely truthful to her. No trust issues there. And, forbidden love - if they fell in love they can't be together - what sort of an unnecessary plot but makes it all the more romantic.

Memorable Moment(s) |
When Kahlan swears to protect Richard - it's revolutionary in the sense it's no longer the man protecting his woman. Kissing beside the wildfire. Fighting shoulder-to-shoulder.
