The Singapore Story Weekend Buffet has debuted on National Day and will be happening every weekend at Bay Hotel's restaurant - Street 50! We are the lucky ones, living in one of the most amazing food paradises in the world! Being at the crossroads of ancient trading routes and migration paths, Singapore results in a brilliant cultural fusion, especially in food. Street 50 celebrates our multi-ethnic culture with a plethora of local street fare here.
This weekend buffet features Street 50's brand-new alfresco buffet area which reminds me of a similar setting at Montigo Resorts (Batam). It definitely exudes a more beach holiday feel, with multiple live stations including a BBQ Station:
At the BBQ station, you can choose to pick your favourite items from a sizzling selection of otah, chicken, beef, squid, prawn, corn on the cob, chicken and mutton satay. Or, leave it to the friendly chefs to help you with them! This is only the beginning...
The highlight of the alfresco live stations have to be the Carving Station: just look at that glistening rotating juicy char siew shawarma! Chef Kelvin attends to us personally as he wraps a few moreish pieces of char siew shawarma mini kebabs. I was surprised by the creativity that they showed in this station, and these mini kebabs were delicious indeed.
Feeling thirsty, we were called to attention to the action-packed Teh Tarik Station. This station follows the theme of the Singapore Story, using a nostalgic Lipton tea to serve up one of our internationally-famous 'pulled milk tea'! For drinks, you can also opt for a free-flow draught beer, wines, and juices here at an additional $28++ per adult.
Fill your stomach to your heart's desire at their signature hot dishes buffet line-up in the air-conditioned dining area including beef rendang, ayam lemak cili padi, sambal mussels, sugarcane prawn skewers, butter chicken, and fish curry! The butter chicken left the best impression on me, with its ultra lemak sauce and tender chicken pieces to be paired with its basmati rice, garlic naan and seafood Hongkong noodles. Another hot favourite was the beef rendang which had a very distinctive 'beef' taste which I didn't like that much, though it was also equally rich and flavourful.
The satay was promptly snatched up by many - who can resist? They are pretty average, but if you still like satay, grab them while they are just served hot to enjoy them at their best.
Other local perennial classics that can be found at the Singapore Story Weekend Buffet include laksa, rojak and otah. The laksa is served straight from the signature laksa station - yes, you can even ask for your favourite extra ingredients from the laksa chef! The laksa is on the spicier side rather than the coconut base sort. The Indian rojak comprises of a generous variety - fish cake, tempeh, boiled egg, boiled potatoes, prawn fritters, coconut fritters and plain fritters.
For those who are looking for seafood, Street 50 has a selection as well, but it was not the main highlight of the buffet. It was not too impressive so we did not try much of it.
Fans of local desserts, you will be delighted wiht pulut hitam with coconut cream and assorted nyonya kueh. I liked that the desserts follow the theme, though I must say that there is some room for improvement for the nyonya kueh.
